Coffee Care
If you’re buying Martha & Bros. coffee beans, we know you care as much about coffee as we do. Here are a few tips to help you get the best out of your beans.
HOW TO STORE YOUR COFFEE
Background
Fine fresh-roasted coffee is perishable – and to keep your fresh-roasted beans at their best, richest flavor once you get them home, it’s important to handle them with care. Store your favorite fresh-roasted beans properly and you can enjoy them for up to three weeks. We recommend the following for best flavor and freshness.
Step 1
Store your whole beans in an airtight container, away from light, humidity, and heat.
Step 2
Keep the container in a cool, dry place like your kitchen cabinets.
Step 3
Do not refrigerate your beans – cold beans immediately attract humidity when taken out of the fridge.
Step 4
NEVER freeze your beans – the coffee’s natural oils spoil as your moist beans freeze, which can ruin the flavor.
Step 5
Buy on a biweekly basis – whole beans can stay fresh for up to three weeks.
HOW TO GRIND YOUR COFFEE
Overview: We’ve found that the following guidelines lead to the best flavor:
Step 1
Grind your coffee evenly to ensure uniform extraction as you brew.
Step 2
A medium grind works best for most: too fine a grind can extract bitterness, and too coarse a grind.
Step 3
For optimum freshness, grind just what you need for each day.
Step 4
For french press brewing, grind your beans for 7-10 seconds.
Step 5
For paper filter brewing, grind your beans for 15-20 seconds.
Step 6
For espresso brewing, grind your beans for 20-25 seconds.
How to brew the best filtered coffee cup
Step 1
Start with fresh cold water.
Step 2
Heat water to a boil and let it sit for a few moments.
Step 3
Place two to three tablespoons of ground coffee per cup into your filter.
Step 4
Pour hot water evenly over the grounds.
Step 5
Water should drip down the coffee filter for just about four minutes to avoid over-extraction, which can result in a bitter brew. (If water drips through the cone in less than two minutes, you’ll get a weak brew.)
